Trendy vs. Timeless Fashion

It is a universally acknowledged truth that the only constant thing in fashion is that fashion is constantly changing. Everything goes in and out of fashion, from textures to patterns to cuts and styles. However, some pieces will stand the test of time and prove to be “timeless.”

In fashion, “timelessness” refers to styles or designs that are generally not influenced by trends and maintain their relevance for years without appearing outdated. They are usually classic and versatile pieces that have global recognition and appeal.

While all clothes are trendy until proven timeless, it is possible to predict if an article will withstand its current trend. And while we love to indulge in the latest trends, there is something special about those timeless pieces that never seem to go out of style. What makes clothing timeless is its versatility and endless appeal. They are those outfits you’ve been wearing for the past five years and can easily picture yourself wearing for the next five. Timeless pieces come in various styles, proving they can adapt to trends while maintaining their timeless essence.

On the other hand, trendy clothes come into the fashion industry suddenly and spread rapidly. They often start in a niche community but quickly gain widespread popularity, often selling out and ending up resold. However, trends have a habit of fading away as fast as they appear. So, while it is fun to indulge in the latest trends, remember that what is popular today might not be tomorrow. Fashion is a balance between chasing trends and embracing timeless classics.

As a disclaimer, it is okay to be into trends! Many people start their fashion journeys through what is currently trending and by social media's definition of what is “cool.” Do not let whether or not an article is trendy or timeless define what clothes you buy. While timeless pieces have long-lasting relevance, do not let them dictate defining your personal style. Instead, focus on buying clothes and pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable.

SHOES

Shoes hold a unique place in the realm of fashion. Positioned somewhere between clothing articles and accessories, they possess a distinct status. For a shoe to achieve longevity, it must have existed for a decade or more while maintaining global recognition and popularity. Shoes that have only been on the market for a year or so have an uncertain future and often lean on the trendier side. One facet unique to shoe fashion is the presence of dupes. When a shoe gains enough attention to inspire imitations, it often seals its status as a timeless classic. The original shoe becomes the blueprint, as every shoe, even the most innovative ones, builds off an already established silhouette or idea.

BOTTOMS

For bottoms, most denim and corduroy items are timeless. Bottoms that are over-dramatized (ultra-wide pants, short skirts) deviate from the norm and are often trendy. A good rule of thumb is if you put a “size” adjective before the article (mini, flare, skinny, etc.), that item will most likely be trendy.

TOPS

In terms of tops, basics will always be timeless. Plain white or black tees and tanks, sweatshirts, and crewnecks are closet staples that can go with any outfit.

ACCESSORIES

Accessories are often unique to the wearer. However, some styles are staples in how we adorn ourselves.
